9th Grade Digs Agriculture Week

by Jack Pelose
This past week the ninth grade did not have any normal classes. Instead, we spent the week studying agriculture both in our own WSP garden (at the Rengstorff site) and on our various short field trips. The week was arranged and supervised by our very own gardening teacher, Anastasia Sinclair.
We started with a focus on our own garden, which was in need of care after the two week spring break.
Our first task was to pull lots of weeds, but we also added mulch to the paths to keep down the weeds in the future. To prepare for this season’s planting we removed the fava bean cover crop and turned the soil, while adding a little compost to supplement the nutrients in the soil. We proceeded to plant squash, corn, tomatoes, beans, and even a couple of citrus trees. Through all this, there was an organized method to our work.

Digging, shoveling, and planting, all things I learned more about during a week filled with hands-on agricultural education. The freshmen of WSP (Waldorf School of Peninsula) stopped their normal weekly schedule to focus on the art and science of sustainable agriculture and Permaculture. Exploring it led not only to weeding and basic gardening, but also to studying sustainable, environmental-friendly architecture and learning how one of the largest companies, Google, is incorporating Permaculture into their buildings.

Standing where the concrete ends, the grass cool on my bare feet, I look out on the garden and think of how much I’ve learned and done in the past week. Rich earth teeming with enough life to grow a good amount of food. Sturdy young plants stretching towards the sky, taking in water, sunlight and minerals, converting mere elements into a solid, nourishing meal.

Community Life
Announcing . . . The Parent Exchange!
Where to leave those size 2 rain boots I borrowed for Covelo? Where is that platter I put birthday cupcakes on, and then my dear, sweet child forgot to bring it home? Where do I leave these remnants of Eros by Plymouth Yarns Color # 3260 - "Seeing Red" or might be called "Strawberry" that another parent asked for on Freecycle?
Where oh where, indeed?!?! Why, the Parent Exchange cabinet, of course!
The large cabinets at the LA campus just outside the Faculty Room and the Nursery Classroom are now designated as the Parent Exchange (or PX, as we like to call it). This is now the place for you to leave and pick up all those exchanges that are so vital to the life of our community! Please always label your items with: Your Name, Recipient's Name, Date of Drop-off.
The Parent Circle sponsors this new piece of our community and we will clean it out periodically. You will be given plenty of notice before we do, so that you can claim or reclaim any items that seem to be missing from your collection We are grateful to Beth Lee and Simon Colbert for helping us realize our dream! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask Nyssa in the LA Reception office.

New Items!
Halcyon Yarn As many of you knitters have heard, we have actively been looking for a replacement for the 100% wool yarn we used to carry. We are pleased to offer Halcyon yarns in bulky and super bulky weight. Theses skeins are perfect for children projects, knitting up warm hats and felting projects. Come check out the great selection of neutral tones and colors.
Reg Down Many of you have enjoyed Tiptoes Lightly in the past but now your child is ready for something more age appropriate. For the 9-12 year old group, we introduce the most recent book, Sir Gillygad and the Gruesome Egg. We anticipate your children will enjoy reading this to themselves as much as they enjoyed hearing you read all about Tiptoes and her adventures.
Help Needed Heart’s Delight is in need of volunteer assistance for the last month of school.
On a regular basis, we are looking for a volunteer to work one of the following shifts: M, T, W afternoon from 12:30-3:00pm. Alternatively, we would appreciate a volunteer Tuesday or Wednesday mornings from 8:30am to 12:30pm. Store Volunteers receive a 20% discount off all regular items and the opportunity to meet new families and make new friends.
If you are available to help on a weekly basis, please stop by, call 650-949-2399, or contact us at store@waldorfpensinula.org.
